My favorite movies of 2007

By Mark Ramsey | 2008/01/06

Probably my favorite movie of 2007 was 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe.

Other stuff I liked a lot this year: Atonement, Sweeney Todd, The Kite Runner, American Gangster (especially the great performance by the legendary Ruby Dee), 300, I Am Legend, Talk to Me (with Don Cheadle) and – last but definitely not least – David Fincher’s amazing Zodiac.

In the comedy category, I loved Knocked Up. And Spider-Man 3 (which is a comedy, let’s face it). And even the latest Pirates of the Caribbean flick (another comedy, to be sure, matey).

In the category of stuff you should seek out that isn’t generating tons of publicity, definitely look for Waitress with Keri Russell. Keri and I were in the same magazine recently, by the way. Of course, I was inside it and she was on the cover, but she had better watch her back!

Or at least her back cover!

Over-hyped movies I did not particularly like: Dan in Real Life, which could have used less real life and more funny, Margot at the Wedding with Nicole Kidman, and (the one you’re going to hate me for) Juno.

Margot is all about family dysfunction, but family dysfunction is less boring in the aisles at Wal-Mart.

And Juno is fine – except that if a school full of teens were this articulate, Soupy Sales-savvy, and whip-smart clever, MTV’s Tila Tequila would be hooking up with Model U.N. and the S.A.T. instead of dumbass bisexual horndogs. It’s a dozen characters speaking in the same Letterman-esque voice.

Juno should be subtitled Planet of the Janeane Garofalos.

Let the buyer beware.
